As the cooler fall months approach, it’s time to rethink irrigation schedules to match the changing needs of your landscape. Fall brings lower temperatures and reduced sunlight- all factors that mean your plants need less water. While the days may still be warm, the shorter days and cooler nights in the months of October and November means less evaporation, which means less irrigation is needed.
Making the right fall irrigation adjustments helps prevent overwatering, protects plants from damage, and saves on water bills. Why adjust your irrigation? Plants naturally reduce their water uptake as they prepare for dormancy. Holding onto a summer watering schedule risks overwatering, leading to root rot, fungal diseases and wasted resources.
In addition to reducing watering frequency and duration, your sprinkler system might need a recalibration. As the sun’s path moves southward in winter and northward in summer, the shadows cast by trees, fences and structures shift. So areas that were sunny in summer might be shaded in winter. Adjusting spray patterns or runtimes keeps shaded areas from becoming soggy while ensuring sunny patches still get adequate coverage. In short, as sunlight and temperature change, water needs vary, shadows shift, evaporation rates drop, and sprinkler coverage can drift slightly. Recalibrating ensures each zone waters efficiently and evenly throughout the year. My job was not exactly landscaping; it was the removal of thousands of tumbleweeds that had blown into our property.
